Education Program

The purpose of the education program is to directly respond to problems of student retention, especially girls, and relevant education.

Parents identify the reasons and the solutions to teacher and student absenteeism.

Through direct support of Khmer teachers, as a supplement to their Ministry of Education salary, teachers are made accountable for their performance to the school supporting committee.

 

The committee will decide how it would like to enhance the state academic curriculum by offering enrichment classes that teach life skills that the committee and their community deems valuable.

 Economic Support for Teachers:

We provide Khmer teachers with what they need to do the job:

• Housing with bathroom, shower and kitchen
• Teacher Attendance Bonus:  A incentive based salary bonus to bring their meager $30 per month government salary up to $100.  This support enables them to be reliable and accountable to the school supporting committee. 
• A text book for every student so they don't have to write every lesson out on the board.  (the upper education officials steal the books that the government is supposed to supply)
• Income generation supplies such as gardening and fish pond materials.
• As one teacher tells us "We are more lucky than the other teachers and we want to make this school the best one."
• Our dream at SSI is to have all the schools we help support filled with teachers who feel the same way.

For the majority of rural Cambodian students, a solid education must provide them with life skills, connecting what is learned from books with profitable work.
