Educators

Sustainable Schools International's Service Learning Programs help educators turn students into Peacemakers.

Students can make a real difference in the life of a child thousands of miles away.

We have worked with  children as young as Kindergarten and as old as High School and beyond.

Some of the main topics we cover

  • Sustainablity
  • Deforestation (environmental impact and impact on regional endangered species)
  • Social Experimentation (A day in the life of a Cambodian student vs. an American student)
  • Financial implications of running a school without funds
  • Creating Folktales based on children's own understanding of Cambodia and it's issues

We are developing our Awareness to Action program to accompany a youth edition of Bones That Float.

The program will help US students understand the link between education and economic secturity in developing countries.  It will also teach the value of economic sustainability.    Please contact us if you are interested.

Sustainable Schools International's Teacher-to-Teacher Alternative Gift Program

The Problem:

In Cambodia, a government salary of $30 a month isn't enough for a teacher to live on

  • Therefore, rural teachers simply don't show up and urban teachers extract bribe payments from students
  • As a result, 80% of Cambodian children drop out of school between grades 3 and 6, primarily due to teacher absenteeism or unaffordable fees.

The Sustainable Solution:

Sustainable Schools International provides housing for teachers and a monthly attendance bonus that supports teachers with an adequate living wage. Teachers are made accountable to the local parents while local students are studying to become teachers and doctors in their community.

Our Teacher-to-Teacher Alternative Gift Program:

  • An individual or a classroom contributes $100 to sponsor a Khmer teacher for one month in their teacher's Honor.  Classrooms can choose to sponsor for multiple months.
  • Your designated teacher will be made an honorary Sustainable Schools International Ambassador with a gift box for the classroom to decorate and give during the Holidays.

Ambassadors Gift Box includes:

  • Tools to teach students about Cambodia and the issue facing children who are trying to go to school in a war torn country
  • SSI T-shirt
  • Choose a $30 gift card to Happy Lucky's Teahouse and Treasures or a copy of Bones That Float: A Story of Adopting Cambodia

A gift contribution in honor of your child's teacher can provide:

____ $100 pays a teacher for a month

____ $50 supports a high school student for a month.

____ $25 keeps a low-income girl in a school for a month

____ $10 outfits one student with a uniform and school supplies.

All donations are tax-deductible. Please note your teacher's name and school.

"Without SSI, our lives would be much more miserable.
As you already know that the salary from the government alone is not very much to live on.
We are grateful for everyone who gets involved to help us out."

While we sincerely hope to educate other children around the world about the children of Cambodia, we ask that as a participant in our service learning programs that you use one of our fundraising methods or create your own to help the children in Cambodia who need it most.  It only costs $100 to pay a teacher's salary for a month.  Small goals like this are very attainable.
