Music
He had survived the Khmer Rouge Killings of artists in the late 1970's, but hadn't taught music since. When 86 year old master musician Em Luot offered to teach at the village school, Cambodia's first rural primary school music program was born.
Music is a life skill taught at the Chrauk Tiek Primary School, resurrecting the arts, celebrating traditional culture, bringing communities together and providing income-generating skills.
By having a music program at the school, community members learn for the first time about a crucial peice of their cultural heritage that was stripped away by the Khmer Rouge.
When music is being played outside, villagers gather around to listen and a sense of community is reinforced, one of our main goals at SSI.
If you would like to help provide a scholarship for a promising music student to continue their studies to become a master music teacher at the Royal Arts Academy please contact us. While Em Luot is trying to pass on his knowledge, he will not live forever.
